Pakistani Documentary Nominated For Oscar Awards

Emmy Award winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s latest film Saving Face has won an Oscar nomination in the category “Best Documentary, Short Subject”.

Saving Face is the story of two women from Southern Punjab who are victims of acid attack. “It’s a positive story about Pakistan on two accounts: firstly, it portrays how a Pakistani-British doctor comes to treat them and it also discusses, in great depth, the parliament’s decision to pass a bill on acid violence,” Obaid-Chinoy had said when her film was short-listed for nominations in October 2011, according The Express Tribune. The recently passed Acid Control and Acid Crime Prevention Bill requires that the perpetrators of acid violence be punished with life in prison.

Saving Face was released in the US in November, 2011, and the Oscars will be awarded on February 26, 2012.

Born in 1978 in Karachi, Sharmeen is the first Pakistani to win an Emmy award. She won it for her documentary Pakistan: Children of the Taliban in 2010. She graduated from Smith College in the United States with a bachelor of arts in economics and government and then went to complete two master’s degrees from Stanford University in International Policy Studies and Mass Communications.

Obaid-Chinoy began her career with New York Times Television in 2002 with the production of Terror’s Children, a film about Afghan refugee children, which won her the Overseas Press Club Award, the American Women and Radio and Television Award, and the South Asian Journalist Association Award. Since then, she has produced and reported on more than twelve films around the world. Her films have been shown on Channel 4, CNN, PBS, and Al-Jazeera English.

Sharmeen has a very ambitious social and educational reform agenda for her country. In addition to her career as a filmmaker, Sharmeen is a TED fellow and a social entrepreneur. She is actively working to bring about an “education revolution” in Pakistan’s Sindh province. “There needs to be an overhaul,” Obaid-Chinoy recently told Fast Company. “Textbooks are outdated and I’ve been working with the government on how to encourage critical thinking and move away from rote memorization….It’s tough, because the mindset is not there. The teachers are essentially products of the same system. We have to break the culture, which takes a long time.”

Sindh’s teachers are now spending significant time in professional training with education experts to try and reform the teaching of English, math, and social studies. “We’re really making this a movement for education for social change,” Obaid-Chinoy told Fast Company.

According to Forbes.com, the ‘Marry the Night’ singer’s earning was more than double of any other female pop stars over the past 12 months, raking in an impressive 90 million dollars in 2011, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Country singer Taylor Swift came in second with 45 million dollars with Katy Perry closely behind her with 44 million dollars.
Beyonce Knowles and Rihanna rounded off the top five, earning 35 million dollars and 29 million dollars respectively.
Gaga’s remarkable earnings were mainly due to her ‘Monster Ball’ tour, which grossed 1.3 million dollars a night as well as many endorsement deals, which included the likes of Polaroid,Virgin Mobile, Monster Cable and PlentyOfFish.com.
The earnings estimates were arrived with the help of data from Pollstar, RIAA and others, as well as extensive interviews with industry insiders including lawyers, managers, concert promoters, agents and, in some cases, the musicians themselves.
The totals encompass all pre-tax income earned from May 2010 to May 2011, before subtracting agent and manager fees.

“Launching my dad`s film today with a little pooja at YRF… shoot starts tomorrow with @ iamsrk and Katrina Kaif.. Dad directing after Veer- Zaara (sic),” Uday tweeted.

The film is yet to be titled but the work goes on floor today. It will also star YRF clan’s favourite girl Anushka Sharma.

This film is something to look forward to, not only because of the SRK and Kat pairing but also since the veteran filmmaker Yash Chopra returns to direction after seven years after ‘Veer Zaara’ in 2004.

Since opening in 1994, the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre, has come to be recognized as one of the most
credible charities in Pakistan. Currently, 75% of all cancer patients seen at the Hospital are receiving financial support.

Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) is a state-of-the-art cancer centre located in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan.

It is a project of the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust, which is a charitable organization established under the Societies Registration Act XXI of

1860 of Pakistan. The institution is the brainchild of Pakistani cricket superstar, Imran Khan. The inspiration came after the death of his mother, Mrs. Shaukat Khanum, from cancer.

Recently, the plans to build the second Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Peshawar are underway.
The construction work for the project is started and the hospital is expected to be functional in about 3 years.
Funds are being raised for the cause and the government of Pakhtunkhwa province has donated 50 Canals of land for the hospital.
