Ali Zafar answers everything right from terrorism, beauty, films and love for his country in a telephonic interview with Lipika Varma

Ali Zafar the Pakistani singer and the lead actor in TERE BIN LADEN, feels that India and Pakistan should be having amicable relationship as American and Canadian borders pursue.’ Yes! We are just across the border an we always feel that we should be allowed to move in and out of India and Pakistan, without much hi-cups like the Americans and Canadians do. I personally feel that things need to change for both India and Pakistan. It has been high time when we should extend friendly relationship by trying to extend our business, trade relationships. When I say we I mean both the ways it is difficult for both Indians as well as Pakistani’s not to have co ordeal relationship and the general junta would love to have a co ordeal relationship.”

We interrupt and quiz but as it is said that terrorism has been spread by Pakistan what is your take on it? I am not a politician so I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO ANSWER THIS QUERY. But I may take this opportunity to tell you that Pakistan is the most effected country by the terrorists itself. We are the victims of terrorism, every day there is a bomb blast somewhere or the other in the important places in the country we want a peaceful life why would we, who are suffering attacks from the terrorists support them.

Coming down to some lighter queries we ask if he finds Pakistani women more beautiful when compared to Indian women? Laughs! Aloud and trying to be politically correct he says,” Indian women too are beautiful, But why compare beauty only between two countries. Beauty can be noted from within all over the globe. I think women all over the world are beautiful. Well! We hear your wife is a trained beautician, will you allow her to work? Yea! Why not? People have wrong notions that Pakistani women are restricted to live within the four walls of the house only. This is totally a wrong perception. Like any other women in the world we allow our ladies to move about freely. There are many-trained make up artists [women] in Pakistan and they are allowed to be professional. Right now my son Aazan is very small and my wife has to look after him so she is unable to take up her profession ahead. Once she is free from her responsibilities she will be free to work if she likes to. Not necessarily do they have to wear a burkha they also can wear a simple jeans and shirt in our country.

Coming to his bollywood films we ask him why he did not try working with Mahesh Bhatt? Yes! I was to do one of his projects but it could not work out because by the time I got an offer, I had already signed TBL. Ishaha Allah! If everything goes well I may do a film with two big banners. Right now I cannot declare their names.

So does Ali possess a proper working visa? And why is he attracted to bollywood? Yes! I do possess a double multiple visa. It was kind of the Indian embassy to give it to me. Bollywood has marvelously extended its wing Internationally. In Pakistan people crave for Indian movies. Hindi films surely allure audiences all over the world. Speaking about his favorite actors adds,” I like Dilip Kumar. Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan . I did meet Aamir Khan while he was down Pakistan for promotions of his film Mangal Pandy four years ago. Hopefully I may meet him this time. Surprisingly, he likes Kareena and Katrina because they are beautiful.

Last but not the least when we ask him being a singer would he love to sing a number which may have the first line” Zindabaad Hindustan? I am a Pakistani. I love my country. That’s all I may say…. Hmm sounds a real patriot.

Now one hears that actor and self-styled star Kamal R Khan (or KRK as he likes to be called) has sent Prakash Jha a legal notice claiming rights over the title Raajneeti.

When contacted Jha admits Kamaal, known to generate publicity for himself through various controversies, has indeed sent a legal notice claiming copyrights over the title Raajneeti.

“But my lawyers are looking into it .There’s absolutely nothing in this claim. We shouldn’t give any importance to people who jump into the picture at the time of release for whatever reasons. Look at the way Rakesh Roshan is being harassed over Kites by some person claiming to be entitled to crores of rupees. Earlier we had someone making claims over Ram Gopal Varma’s Rann days before release. This is not done!”

Speaking on Mr Naseem Khan’s claims that Raajneeti casts aspersion on one of the most revered politicians of the country, Prakash Jha retorts, “Let all these self-styled supports of Soniaji come forward to show their loyalty. Am I an irresponsible citizen and filmmaker who would do something so foolish as to portray Soniaji in a bad light? No one has seen a frame of Raajneeti. How does anyone presume that Katrina’s character has any resemblance to Soniaji? Have I said it anywhere? Has Katrina said it anywhere? Let Soniaji watch Raajneeti and decide.”

Ram Gopal Varma very recently and Rakesh Roshan during the release of Krazzy 4 when composer Ram Sampat made plagiarism charges, had to opt for hefty out-of-court settlement to pay up to get their films released. This time both Rakesh Roshan and Prakash Jha are adamant on not giving in to what they see as arm-twisting tactics.

About an out-of-court settlement with the aforementioned Mr Naseem Khan, Prakash Jha said, “Over my dead body. I’d burn the prints of my film rather than give into such blackmail. No out-of-court settlement for me. I’ve seen enough legal obstacles in my life. This is nothing.”

With Nandana Sen’s ‘Rang Rasiya’ already clearing off the censor with topless scenes, the question arises that do movie makers still doubt the maturity of Indian audience.

Payal Rohatgi, who is known for her ‘bold’ image says, “I think the Indian audience is not mature enough. Men download images to gratify themselves but movies are a different genre. Movies are meant for family watching and a raunchy promo will insure that family audiences don’t pull in. So movie makers are also vary,”

Film critic Taran Adarsh says, “At the click of the button you can access information. Technology cannot be curtailed. Anything can be seen online even if you try to keep it away from film prints.”

Sherlyn Choprais bold and sexy and she has proved this by posing nude for PETA. The gal is again going to make guys fall weak in the knees by posing naked for a men’s magazine Playboy. To do the photo shoot, the actress has received a call from Hugh Hefner’s office with the offer.

“I have never posed nude therefore I was a bit apprehensive about the offer. But I got a photographer friend to do a few test clicks and I loved the results”, quips Sherlyn. She has got a fit and flexible body as she is a regular performer of yoga, “I can do positions which the magazine would love,” quotes Sherlyn.

“I wanted to meet him for a long time and the time has finally come. I will be going to his mansion. I have heard so many interesting stories about him and now it’s my chance to know him up, close and personal,” she added.

Sherlyn is over the moon with the offer and she was eagerly waiting for the opportunity for she wanted to make India proud by posing for the international magazine.

Chandigarh, Former Miss India and actress Gul Panag will now be seen in a new avatar of a crusader disseminating awareness about social evils like female foeticide and drug addiction.

She has joined hands with the Chandigarh administration for this endeavour. The health department here has enrolled a city-based NGO Shamsher Singh Foundation under the ongoing partnership initiative programme of Chandigarh administration, said officials here Thursday.

Gul, founder member of this NGO, has signed the memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the health department to work in this direction.

“We have assured the officials concerned that our NGO will work with full dedication and commitment. We will make this programme of generating awareness against female foeticide and drug addition a huge success in this region,” said Gul, 31, Thursday.

The actress is known for doing socially relevant films — her first film “Dhoop” was based on the real story of Kargil war hero Anuj Nayyar. In Nagesh Kukunoor’s “Dor”, she played Zeenat Fatima, who fights to save her husband, and received critical acclaim for her performance.

The administration has briefed Gul and other officials of the NGO about their roles and responsibilities.

“We have apprised them about their responsibilities in generating awareness about these issues. Their work involves monitoring of ultrasound centres to prevent sex determination tests as well as volunteering as decoy clients to conduct raids,” said Ram Niwas, health-cum home secretary of Chandigarh.

“The NGO will also motivate people by recognising the birth of second girl child in the form of celebrations of birthdays or festivals like Lohri. They will also identify drug addicts and help them to shun drugs,” stated Niwas.

Showing baby bump might be a fashion in Hollywood but the trend is still to catch up in Bollywood. Our Bollywood actresses are reluctant to exhibit their increasing baby bumps in camera. As reported, Kajol is expecting her second child and she is showing her hesitant to show her increasing baby bump during an ad shoot. She asked the camera person to focus on her face than her body. She asked him to take close-ups rather than long shots as she is few months pregnant and her bump is revealing. This happens while shooting for anti-aging cream at the Mehboob studio.

An eyewitness informs, “While shooting the commercial Kajol was a tad reluctant to shoot long shots due to her pregnancy. She politely told the team to only take close-up shots.” The actress was accompanied by her mother Tanuja. The source adds, “Kajol looked lovely in a loose black dress, which she was wearing for obvious reasons. She was glowing. But she looked flustered as it was very hot. She kept munching biscuits and sipping juices to beat the heat.”

Presently, Kajol is working for Karan Johar’s ‘Stepmom’.

New Delhi, Indian designers feel that Aishwarya Rai was looking “pretty” and “elegant” in a train gown at the opening ceremony of the Cannes International Film Festival, yet some wished she had stuck to a sari.

The 36-year-old actress had Wednesday night worn a violet blue fully embroidered tulle and mousseline gown from Lebanese designer Elie Saab, teaming it with round solitaires and topped with a buffon hairstyle – reminding one of yesteryears actresses like Sharmila Tagore.

Aishwarya has been attending the French film festival since 2002 as the global face of L’Oreal and except for last year, when she wore a white off-shoulder Roberto Cavalli train gown, the actress had received flak from the designers for her bad dress sense on the red carpet.

This time, Aishwarya got it more right than wrong.

According to designer Vijay Arora the actress looked fabulous on the red carpet.

“The first word that comes to my mind after looking at her picture is Wow! She looked so stunning and ravishing. Also the colour of the gown suited her,” explained Arora.

“Over the period of years, she has learnt the art of mastering the red carpet and she is just getting better day by day,” he added.

Designer Jai from the designer duo Parvesh-Jai too gave a thumbs up to the actress for her growing romance with the gowns at the French film festival.

“Oh, she was looking hot and nice. What a wonderful train gown she was wearing, she just looked stunning. But I was not happy with her hairstyle. The last time, she had pulled it back. This time, she should have tied it in a bun or may be left it open,” Jai explained.

“I guess she looked a bit formal as well..something we don’t see in her when she is in India or on any other red-carpet. Maybe it is the French atmosphere that does the trick,” he added.

However, designer Leena Singh of designer duo Ashima-Leena felt that a sari could have been chosen over the gown.

“There is no doubt that she is a beautiful woman and looked elegant in that gown. She projects modern India to the world, so I feel if she could have worn a sari instead, the message could have reached to millions of people that we are modern yet we are Indian at heart,” Leena Singh told IANS.

Designer Charu Parashar agreed, saying that as a style icon, Aishwarya could have done much better.

“You see, that feathery gown did not bring out the real Aishwarya. She could have worn a backless sari and looked very sexy. She is beautiful and her body type is excellent for a sari. I think she could have done much better,” Parashar maintained.

Here, Jai came to Aishwarya’s rescue, saying that in all possibility, the final call on the dress code was taken by the sponsors and not her, so the actress should not be blamed.

“Well, it’s very easy to say that wear a sari. But the thing is that she is representing India for an international cosmetics brand. So, I am sure that it is a policy decision of the sponsors and not her,” maintained Jai.

“We should spare her for this and appreciate that she has been representing India there for eight years now and every year, she is getting better and better,” he added.

Shooting of the Kangana Ranaut-Madhavan starrer “Tannu Weds Mannu”, planned in a mosque in this Punjab town, was cancelled after protests by the local residents, police said.

According to the officials, the shooting of the movie was planned inside a mosque here but was cancelled on the orders of Kapurthala deputy commissioner Rajkamal Chaudhary.

“Members of the film unit had started installing the sets inside the mosque Friday night. On seeing this, members of Muslim community gathered outside the mosque and started raising slogans against the administration and the filmmakers,” said a police official.

“They threatened to interrupt the shooting as it would allegedly affect their religious sentiments.”

“Tannu Weds Mannu” stars Kangana Ranaut, Madhvan and Jimmy Shergill. It is produced by Shailesh Singh and is directed by Anand Malhotra.

Bollywood is heading for another splitsville and this time it is actor Arshad Warsi and wife Maria who have been together for over a decade now. The reason is the same old one- the entry of a third person in a happy marriage. Apparently, Arshad’s linkup with Dia Mirza had been disturbing Maria and time and again, news of trouble in their relationship kept cropping up.
