Amitabh Bachchan & Rajnikanth are finally coming together again. Yes, you heard it right, the superstars will been seen together in upcoming multilingual film Raana.

If sources are to be believed, Amitabh Bachchan will be doing a cameo role in K.S Ravikumar directorial Rana. The actor will be seen in a few scenes in the second half of the film. But other details about his character has been kept under wraps.

Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth have acted in many Hindi films like Andha Kanoon, Giraftar, Hum etc. However, the movie also features Deepika Padukone, Vidya Balan and Rekha in the key roles.

Oscar award winner A.R Rahman will score the music, Ratnavelu will handle the camera and Charles Darby will be the technical director of the film. Rajini’s daughter Soundarya Rajinikanth is jointly producing the movie with Eros International.

After singing for 30 years in films -his first song was recorded for Mr Natwarlal in 1979– Amitabh Bachchan has joined vocal forces with a trained and renowned vocalist like Rashid Khan, the singer whom the formidable classical maestro Pandit Bhimsen Joshi had once chosen as his successor.

The coming together of India’s most popular actor and part-time singer with the classical maestro happened for the album Sound Of Peace, dedicated to the victims of Mumbai’s 26/11 terrorist attack.

Aadesh Shrivastav who helmed the project, composed its music and is in the process of finalizing a music video featuring the Big B and Rashid Khan, says the Big B simply swam across Sameer’s words of world-peace.

The Big B confirms modestly, “Yes, Rashid Khan and I have sung together. The system of recording these days allows a lot of freedom to sing how one is comfortable. That’s how I managed it.”

The music video, for which efforts are on to get Ashutosh Gowariker to direct, will feature the Big B with Rashid Khan and Aadesh Shrivastav. Footage from the barbaric occurrences during 26/11 from 2008 in Mumbai will be interspersed with scenes from 9/11 in the US from 2001 and the London subway bombings of 2005.

Says Aadesh, “We initially planned to make this a Hindi -Urdu album in memory of the 26/11 victims. But we’ve now expanded it into a comment on global terrorism. Mr Bachchan is now in the process of recording an English version of the peace song.”

A ghost, an eccentric theatre actor or a flamboyant genie, Amitabh Bachchan has done quite a few over-the-top roles and not delivered big hits in four years. But for filmmakers, the megastar is still a phenomenon they can’t wait to sign on.

“I would love to cast him for all my films. I just hope that I keep getting ideas where I can fit him, ” said R. Balakrishnan, director of his forthcoming film “Paa”.

Relasing Dec 4, “Paa” features Amitabh as a progeria patient.

“Amitabh Bachchan has crossed that mark of a hit or a flop affecting him. He is a phenomenon. He is the first veteran where stories are written keeping him in mind. Whether or not a film works is besides the point. He is not competing with anyone here, ” trade analyst Taran Adarsh told over phone from Mumbai.

“Every director wants to work with him at least once in his career. They’ve grown up watching him on the big screen. He is an encyclopaedia on acting. He has a different range altogether. He is a superb actor…and we can’t deny that fact, no matter what the fate of a film, ” he said.

Some of the 67-year-old thespian’s films have turned out to be over-hyped in terms of both content and characters, with the recent one being “Aladin” that was declared a dud on the first day itself. Amitabh plays a flamboyant genie in the movie.

Even his special appearance in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s “Delhi-6″ early this year, as Abhishek Bachchan’s grandfather, could not save the film from sinking. But he still rules the desire list of filmmakers.

“He is in demand because he is Amitabh Bachchan. He is a cult (figure). He has worked very hard and given success after success earlier. After his comeback from a break a few years ago, he is now having fun with cinema, ” said film critic Omar Qureshi.

“And he can afford to do that even if it means doing a crazy character in ‘Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag’. He is doing roles that he finds interesting. If the film doesn’t work, that is not his fault.”

And cinema too has undergone a sea change with time.

“Take his characters in ‘Nishabd’ and ‘Aladin’. No one could dare do that earlier. He is just going with the flow. His performance cannot be doubted. He is too good as an actor, ” explained Qureshi.

While Amitabh featured in duds like “Family”, “Darna Zaroori Hai”, “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna” and “Baabul” in 2006, a string of flops followed in 2007 too with “Eklavya: The Royal Guard”, “Nishabd”, “Jhoom Barabar Jhoom” and “Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag”. Two of his outings the same year – “Cheeni Kum” and “Shootout at Lokhandwala” – were critically acclaimed but were not money grossers.

Last year was again disappointing with commercial failures like “Bhoothnath”, “Sarkar Raj”, “God Tussi Great Ho” and “The Last Lear”.

But writer-turned-director Rumy Jafry has no regrets for the failure of his film “God Tussi Great Ho” because it starred the Big B.

“It’s a dream for every director to work with him. Despite his age, he still works as a student and is completely a director’s actor. Neither does he interfere in anything. Look at ‘Paa’ for instance. He sat for close to five hours just for the make up and that shows his patience, ” said Jafry, who cast the Big B as God Almighty in the movie.

Jafry can’t stop praising the veteran’s professionalism.

“The whole world knows that there is no bigger actor and star than Amitabh Bachchan. There is no star in the industry more disciplined than him. Even if he was 10 minutes late, he would make sure to inform, while there are actors who are over two hours late without any notice, ” Jafry told.

But Bachchan prefers to be modest and says he is just a character artist nowadays.

“May be in the early years, they (audiences) came to watch my films because I was in it. But now I am just one of the credit titles. I am not that important, ” Amitabh had told in a recent interview.

“I am a part of the crew and the cast. Even in my early years, I used to think that. I think the product itself is more important. It’s the film that is going to make you or your name or give you visibility. If that goes wrong then everything goes wrong. So one must work as a team so that the product works, ” he added.

The star is still on a signing spree and has four projects lined up – “Paa”, “Teen Patti”, “Rann” and “Johnny Mastana”.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who caught up with actors Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif on the sets of reality show “Bigg Boss 3″ recently, is all praises for the latter and says she is a “modern day marvel”.

“Katrina is a modern day marvel. From a non-Hindi speaking young shy and uncertain lady of ‘Boom’, she has grown and grown to become one of the most desired actresses in our fraternity, ” Amitabh posted on his blog bigb.bigadda.com.

While Amitabh hosts the reality show, Ranbir and Katrina had appeared to promote their film “Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani”, which released Friday.

“They (Ranbir and Katrina) were charming and involved and sweet. Ranbir as you all know is related to me. His cousin – Rishi Kapoor’s elder sister’s son is married to Shweta, my daughter.

“I wished them happiness and success, ” he said.

In the meanwhile, Amitabh is himself busy charting the marketing plans of his forthcoming movie “Paa”, being touted as his best work so far. He plays a 13-year-old suffering from progeria, a rare disease which causes premature ageing.

After the success of Hera Pheri sequel, the trio Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, Suneil Shetty are once again coming together for Hera Pheri 3. The movie will also have a fourth important character – Amitabh Bachchan.

A source reveals, “After the success of the sequels, they decided to add some more masala to the film. Director Anees Bazmee has scripted a very strong character which is the fourth character and of a lot of importance to the story.”

The source continues, “This third sequel will have more twists and turns and one had to play more with the characters. Mr. Bachchan is a wonderful actor and it was very long since one saw him in a comedy role. He will very beautifully essay the role.”

Director Anees Bazmee says, “We are still in the scripting stage. The script is being written keeping Amitabh Bachchan in mind. I still have to narrate the script to him. We both are keen on working with each other. Things yet have to be finalised.”

The movie will be produced by Firoz Nadiadwala and will be directed by Anees Bazmee. The movie will go on floors in March 2011 with Katrina in the lead. The movie will be called Hera Pheri 4.

‘The film is based on North West Frontier Province freedom fighter Abdul Gaffar Khan, widely known as Frontier Gandhi. Amitabh Bachchan will be mouthing heavy Urdu lines in the film and will also sport a beard, kajal and wear Pathani suits,’ informs a source. The movie will go on the floors in February 2010 and in true SLB style, it has a big budget.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali had initially cast Hurman Baweja who was replaced by John Abraham and now Rajeev Khandelwal has been confirmed for the role. Sanjay Leela Bhansali saw him in the rushes of Peter Gaya Kaam Se where he has long hair and chose him for the role. If he cuts his hair, he loses the role. He has to do a lot of research for the role and is extremely nervous about sharing screen space with Mr. Bachchan so early on in his career. He will play his aide in the film.

Though SLB is not directing the film, he is completely involved in his assistant Vibhu Puri’s film. Vibhu Puri was his assistant on Saawariyaa and also assisted Vishal Bhardwaj on The Blue Umbrella. The film will be shot in studios in Mumbai and will wrap up in 2-3 schedules. This is Vidya Balan’s second film with Amitabh Bachchan after R. Balki’s Paa. She is the only female character in the movie but nothing much is known about her role.

Let us hope that Chenab Gandhi turns out to be an interesting lesson in history.
