Esha Deol had once said that her engagement would be a grand event – but the ceremony today was not. It was restricted to a family affair.

Just a few film old Abhay Deol is making waves not in B-town but Hollywood as well. We hear that the ‘Different Deol’ was recently seen in the company of Hollywood legends like Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese at the Tribeca film festival in Qatar.

Talking about the event, Abhay told a daily, “I actually rubbed my eyes in disbelief. I couldn’t believe that I was getting a chance to interact with two of the most powerful names in Hollywood.”

Deol admits that neither De Niro nor Scorsese has seen his film. However, when they got to know that he was an actor from India who had come to Doha with one of his films, they were very polite with him.

Talking about the two actors, he says, “These guys are amazingly humble. Both, De Niro and Scorsese, congratulated me when they got to know that my film was a part of the festival. They wished me good luck for my career.”

“Both these guys knew that I was a newbie wanting to get my work noticed at the festival. And they had only kind words for me. I wish at least one of them had seen my work though”, adds Abhay.

A source tells us, “Abhay is more thrilled about Basra than he is about Aisha. A Martial Arts trainer visits the sets of Aisha to train Abhay. He is beefing up for his first full-fledged action role of a spy. Abhay Deol is a hatke hero who has proved his mettle so obviously he wants a hatke heroine opposite him. Chitrangda Singh is classy, beautiful and a fabulous actress, so he has zeroed in on her for his first home production. There will be two other heroines in the film. One of them is Shahana Goswami, another unconventional actress and the third is yet to be finalized.’

The gritty thriller will be directed by Navdeep Singh who made the critically-acclaimed dark thriller Manorama Six feet Under with Abhay. That film also had two heroines opposite Abhay. The film will go on the floors early next year. The movie begins in the Iraqi town of Basra and moves to Mumbai and Delhi as the story, about drug dealers, progresses.

Chitrangda Singh has shifted base to Mumbai to pursue her acting career whole-heartedly. She is a regular on magazine covers and has been signed as the ambassador for a particular brand of cream.

The film was originally supposed to star Akshaye Khanna, R Madhavan and Fardeen Khan but Abhay Deol has taken over the film, which will be produced by his banner, Forbidden Films.

When contacted, Chitrangda Singh refused to comment and the director said it was too early to comment on the film.

Deols of Bollywood are synonymous to action, just as Kapoors are synonymous to romance. But one Deol boy took the high road. He did the unexpected and did every kind of role but action oriented, that boy was Abhay Deol.

The unconventional hero of Bollywood, now has his own production company called, ‘Forbidden Films’ that is expected to make films that are not typical to Bollywood. Their first venture is the film titled Basra, which is going to see Abhay as the action hero. So, the Deol boy is going to carry on the family tradition by bashing people up on screen.

One wonders if it is a well thought out strategy as this is his first film as a producer. Abhay states that action, comedy and romance are safe genres and when one becomes a producer, he needs to be cautious and read the market.

But this does not mean that he is following Dharmendra or brother Sunny’s footsteps, he clarifies that if others think that he is fit to do only certain kind of movies, he will make movies in which he gets to be different.

If mutual friends are to be believed, there’s considerable tension between Sunny Deol and producer Subhash Ghai over the completion and release of Right Yaaa Wrong. Apparently, Sunny Deol and Ghai are constantly at loggerheads over the long-delayed project.

Says a source close to the project, “The release of the Subhash Ghai-Sunny Deol project keeps getting postponed repeatedly. This is affecting Sunny’s own production The Man. Both have a common factor. Neeraj Pathak, who directs Right Yaaa Wrong also co-directs The Man. The fate of one affects the other.”

Ghai acts injured when told about the rumours regarding the delay, “Naturally, I’m the producer of the film. So I’ll be blamed for the delay. I’m used to it. Every film of mine that gets delayed, I take full blame for it.”

Ghai says the real reason for the delay of Right Yaaa Wrong is the additional shooting involved. “We decided to add two songs, since we all felt there wasn’t enough music in the film. Once the shooting is complete, it’s very hard to co-ordinate everyone’s dates. Irrfan Khan and Konkona Sen-Sharma are busy artistes. But it’s finally happening. We will complete the additional shooting soon. We are releasing the film on January 6.”

That should come as a relief to Sunny and also to Shilpa Shetty who’s the leading lady in Sunny Deol’s The Man. The fate of The Man depends entirely on how and when Right Yaaa Wrong is released.

Says a source, “Sunny is going through considerable financial hardships. It’s not easy for him to complete his pending projects right now. The funds have dried up. But once Subhash Ghai releases Right Yaaa Wrong, Sunny will move ahead with his other project.”
