10 Most Weird Phobias of Hollywood Celebrities

Eminent lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar has claimed that he has received death threats by e-mail and telephone for his views on issues concerning the Muslim community.

“Yes, that is true and I am filing a complaint with the Mumbai police,” Akhtar, a recently nominated Rajya Sabha member.

Though he declined to elaborate, some television reports claimed that Akhtar has been threatened by unknown persons sympathetic to the Darul-Uloom Deoband, an apex body of the Deobandi sect of the Sunni Muslims.

Recently, the sect had issued ‘fatwas’ (edicts) prohibiting Muslim men and women from working together in offices, saying Muslim men should not live off their wife’s salaries, and most recently, prohibiting Muslims from opting for life insurance.

These edicts have been viewed with concern in the community and many have expressed their reservations about accepting them and Akhtar had also expressed his views on the issue.

A Muslim scholar, Mohammed F. Ghosi, said that the edicts must be viewed with proper reference to the context in which they were issued.

“Contrary to general perceptions, these edicts are not binding on the people at large, it is up to the people to choose and decide whether to follow them (the edicts). The ‘fatwa’ is merely showing what the Muslim Shariat Law stands for on any particular issue,” Ghosi, chairman of Bandra Muslims Association, pointed out.

While urging the media to delve into the context in which the edicts were issued, Ghosi also urged Akhtar to first enquire the factual position with the religious heads before criticizing them.

Just a few film old Abhay Deol is making waves not in B-town but Hollywood as well. We hear that the ‘Different Deol’ was recently seen in the company of Hollywood legends like Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese at the Tribeca film festival in Qatar.

Talking about the event, Abhay told a daily, “I actually rubbed my eyes in disbelief. I couldn’t believe that I was getting a chance to interact with two of the most powerful names in Hollywood.”

Deol admits that neither De Niro nor Scorsese has seen his film. However, when they got to know that he was an actor from India who had come to Doha with one of his films, they were very polite with him.

Talking about the two actors, he says, “These guys are amazingly humble. Both, De Niro and Scorsese, congratulated me when they got to know that my film was a part of the festival. They wished me good luck for my career.”

“Both these guys knew that I was a newbie wanting to get my work noticed at the festival. And they had only kind words for me. I wish at least one of them had seen my work though”, adds Abhay.

Mallika Sherwat is making waves in LA. After bagging a Hollywood project, Jennifer Lynch’s Hissss, she is now all set to star in a film based on the US President Barack Obama.

The film by Doug McHenry is a romantic political comedy – Love, Barack. The film tracks the romance between a Democratic campaign volunteer and her Republican counterpart in the run-up to last year’s US Presidential election. The film has Mallika’s character Aretha Gupta inspired by Kamala Harris, the attorney general of San Francisco.

Sherawat is working hard for that thick American accent for her role in the film, which has an all-American cast.

Mallika writes on Twitter: “Kamala is a great inspiration and to play a part inspired by her is an actress’s dream. I will B ‘shadowing’ Harris to research my new movie. It’s an amazing role. I’m working hard at. I’m ready, ” adding: ” One of the great things about western cinema is the diversity of female roles.”

Gary Goldstein, famed for co-producing the Julia Roberts- Richard Gere blockbuster Pretty Woman, has scripted Love, Barack. Bollywood filmmaker Govind Menon is co-producing the film along with Hollywood producer and William Keenan’s company Nuclear Mango.

Kamala happens to be the first woman district attorney to be elected in San Francisco and the first African- American elected as district attorney in California. She is also a candidate for the prestigious post of the attorney general of California in 2010.

Love, Barack had hit the floors in Los Angeles on January 13 this year.
