MUMBAI: Shakti Kapoor, popular for his bad-boy image on screen amazed the audience in Big Boss season 5 by his chivalrous, good-natured behavior. Maybe that’s why he was the next victim to be pulled out of the game.

Kapoor said, “I think the main reason why the audience voted me out was because I wasn’t creating any controversies or being a part of them. Bigg boss’s house means a controversy house.”

Keeping him self aloof from all the fights and melo-drama Kapoor stated that he and Siddharth soon became best of friends. The close bond they shared overshadowed the age difference between them. “Siddharth is very fond of my shades. I told him once he’s out of the house they will be my first gift to him,” said Kapoor.

Being a part of the madhouse for 4 weeks, Kapoor conveyed that he has no hard feelings against Pooja Bedi if she said anything against him. “She’s only playing a game. Once she is out we will meet and eat food together,” he added.

The children and wife of this simple man who doesn’t mind cleaning the dishes or doing other chores are proud of him. “My daughter said that she hopes to get a father just like me in her next life as well,” smiled Kapoor.

There was a famous song of Shashi Kapoor’s which went like “Khilte Hain Gul Yahan Khil Ke Bikharne Ko …. Milte Hain Dil Yaha Mil Ke Bichadne Ko”. This song seems to reflect the love lives of most modern day film-stars of Bollywood. The older generation of actors were much more loyal to their partners and break-ups were not the order of the day. Or maybe they just lived behind a facade of normalcy and the media and general public never found out what was really happening in their lives.

Today, not only do relationships last for incredibly short periods, but each break-up occurs in full media glare and publicity. The frequency and intensity of the romance and it’s ensuing fragmentation are all watched and commented upon by everyone who can read a magazine or watch television, and all of them join in offering advice and suggestions!!

Why can’t they stay together? 

Here is a list of some of the messy and controversial Bollywood breakups which have taken place in the last few years.

1. Salman – Aishwarya: It was a fairy tale romance. He was the handsome lover boy of Bollywood with a heart of gold, and she was the green-eyed breathtakingly beautiful girl who had conquered the world. They were in love and everything around them seemed to be enveloped in a haze of devotion and romance. ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ showed us the intense chemistry between the two of them, but somehow, somewhere their paths diverged and they split up. It was probably one of the messiest break-ups that B-wood had witnessed. We were all privy to the drunken calls and bad language, and sadly a made-for-each-other couple were no more a couple. Aishwarya moved on and married Abhishek after a short liaison with Viveik Oberoi (that’s entirely another story). Salman has been unable to settle down even after a long-stretched courtship with the lovely Katrina (reports of their break up are also doing the rounds). It is rumored that the public spat with SRK happened because of Aishwarya, hence, apparently the ghost of the relationship still haunts our dear Sallu bhai.

3. Kareena Kapoor – Shahid Kapoor:
The romance between these two Kapoors was also an open affair.  At a time when most couples chose to keep their togetherness under wraps, Shahid and Kareena were spotted together anywhere and everywhere. They talked openly about living together as a couple and the magnetism between was very evident.  Then the unforseen happened – rumors have it that Kareena could not accept Shahid’s interference in her professional life and that she got fed-up of his constant need to be together even when she was working abroad. Soon after the separation Kareena got into a relationship with Saif Ali Khan, and it seems to be still going strong. Shahid was also linked with several ladies like Amrita Rao, Sania Mirza and Vidya Balan. Latest news is that Shahid Kapoor is very much in a relationship with Priyanka Chopra.  This break-up was one of the most controversial separations in recent times.

4. Akshay Kumar – Raveena Tandon:
Most people will have forgotten about this relationship, but it hit the headlines when it crumbled. The affair was common knowledge and the break-up produced greater heartache for Raveena than it did for Akshay. Khiladi Kumar was known to be quite a playboy at that time and for many people their separation came as no surprise. Raveena’s career took a downturn soon after this, and many believed that she was unable to recover from this separation.

5. Akshay Kumar – Shilpa Shetty:
Soon after his break up with Ms. Tandon, Akshay hooked up with the hot and sultry Shilpa Shetty. She may have lacked in the “nose department” back then, but even then she had a very sexy figure. Their affair lasted for quite some time and they even got engaged at one point. People were already surprised that Akshay, the casanova was ready to settle down, but soon the inevitable happened. He broke up with Shilpa too. It is said that Akshay’s growing closeness with Twinkle Khanna was the reason behind the break up. Post Shilpa’s win in the reality show ‘Big Brother’, Akshay allegedly revealed intimate details of their sex life, thereby rejuvenating the interest in this long-ended romance.

6. Abhishek Bacchan – Karisma Kapoor:
This was a match made in the Bollywood-heaven. The Kapoor girl and Bacchan boy had got engaged and two members of Bollywood’s prime families were about to be united in holy matrimony. The reasons behind their break-up remain unknown till date, but the rumour mills speak about Big B’s opposition to the match and about Babita’s objecting  because Abhishek was still a struggling actor. They both parted and went their separate ways, with Abhishek marrying the lovely Aishwarya, and Karisma marrying Sanjay Kapur and settling down to motherhood and a troubled ( if rumours are true) marriage. The long-term effect of the break-up has been Kareena’s unwillingness to work with Abhishek Bacchan since then.

7.  Ranbir Kapoor – Deepika Padukone:
When Ranbir debuted, news of his on-going affair with Deepika Padukone had already started making the rounds. Deepika, the long legged babe and Ranbir, the latest chocolate boy on the block made a handsome pair. They were young and looked very much in love. The break up was abrupt and messy. Post the falling apart, Deepika made a few snide remarks about the junior Kapoor which left his father, Rishi Kapoor fuming and indignant. It is commonly believed that the reason for the separation were the frequent indiscretions which Ranbir indulged in while he was still romantically involved with Deepika.

8. Bipasha Basu- Dino Morea:
Bipasha and Dino were were a well-known couple when she debuted in Bollywood. Her struggling days were all spent with Dino Morea. He was a successful model in his own right, but apart from Raaz (starring opposite Bipasha), he did not succeed in the Bollywood film circuit. They separated soon after Bipasha began to achieve a fair degree of success as an actress and post the break-up she went into a relationship with the gorgeous John Abraham. They look beautiful together, so she definitely chose well.

9. Lara Dutta – Kelly Dorjee:
Lara Dutta and Kelly Dorjee were together for a long, long time. They were seen everywhere as a couple and they looked happy and content. Kelly Dorjee had been Lara’s friend since her modeling days and their break up came as a big shock to everybody who knew them personally or professionally. Lara is now planning to get married to the tennis ace Mahesh Bhupathi, whereas Kelly Dorjee seems to have just vanished from the public domain.

10.  Kangana Raanaut – Addhayan Suman:
They were the young couple of Bollywood and while Kangana was a big actress by the time they hooked up, Addhayan had not even begun to take the initial steps. Son of veteran actor/comedian Shekhar Suman, Addhayan was known to be under pressure from dad and mom to avoid getting involved with Kangana. They separated amicably and are among the few ex-couples who are still on talking terms with each other. The only testimony to their relationship seems to be the movie Raaz 2 in which they acted together.

Mandira Bedi is an Indian actress, model and television presenter who gained celebrity status playing the title role in the 1994 television serial Shanti: Ek Ghar Ki Kahaani, shown on India’s national channel, Doordarshan.



She continued a high profile career in the next decade with hosting duties for Cricket World Cups and presentations alongside top TV personality Charu Sharma.

After her star-making turn in Shanti, appeared in a supporting role in the 1995 film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and played the main vamp, “Mandira”, called “Mona” in the popular Indian soap Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Shahid,” says Kunal Kohli. The director tweeted on Sunday morning: “Shahid Kapoor and me working together in my next film. Will hopefully sign the heroine in the next few days. Will keep you posted.” The yet untitled film will be starting in April once Shahid wraps up the shooting for Mausam. Kohli will be producing-directing the film.

Kunal’s film with Shahid is a love story and will have music by Pritam while Prasoon Joshi is writing lyrics. Has he finalized the actress? “I haven’t decided the actress. I wouldn’t want to speculate as I don’t believe in it. I will tell you once it’s finalized. We’ve just finalized Shahid. He was going away to Punjab to shoot Mausam and I was releasing Break Ke Baad. In the middle of it we finalized and signed.”

Kohli had earlier announced a film with Saif Ali Khan. He had also written about it on Twitter (now deleted) as to how things didn’t work out between him and Saif. So, is Shahid doing the same film as what was earlier being done by Saif? “It’s a completely different script,” says Kohli. Why didn’t Saif’s film go through in the first place? “Saif was signed by Ashtavinayak to do a film. He requested me to come in and see if I could do a film with him. I wasn’t ready with that script. I was also simultaneously working on this script for a while. I felt this is the script I want to make first, so I am making this film. That film I will do later when I am fully happy with the script.”

Having worked with seasoned actors like Aamir and Saif, Shahid is a much inexperienced actor in comparison, even though he’s wonderfully talented. “Shahid has done Kaminey, Jab We Met, Vivah, he has done some brilliant films. I am sure Mausam will be another brilliant film. He is a very very interesting talent,” says Kunal.

Kohli’s latest Production Break Ke Baad released last Friday. Talking about the response to the film, Kohli says,”Break Ke Baad is getting a good response from the youth specially. It’s too early. Let’s see how it goes.”

In the film, Shahid’s character plays a struggler, who wants to make it big in the world of showbiz and does several ads in search of his big break. In real life, Shahid wasn’t exactly a struggler, but he was keen on becoming a star. He was a trainer with Shiamak Davar’s dance company, and appeared in commercials for Pepsi and Complan (as a child).

He also did a music video for The Aryans and was seen as a background dancer in Subhash Ghai’s Taal. He got his big break, Ishq Vishk, after auditioning for several movies. He had to face a few pitfalls in his career before he made it big.

In Chance Pe Dance, Shahid’s character is a brilliant dancer and dance teacher dabbling in different styles like Hip-Hop, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Jazz, Bollywood and Modern, which Shahid is in real life too. He was one of Shiamak Davar’s top trainers. He is a huge fan of Justin Timberlake and danced like him in Kismat Konnection. Moreover, Justin’s choreographer has worked on the songs in Chance Pe Dance.

Shahid’s on-screen character is not fond of children, and in real life, Shahid used to have minor tiffs with the children in his building, but he was a child at the time too. A very young girl loved arguing with him when he was a teenager. They were playful fights, and that has been incorporated in the film.

Chance Pe Dance, starring Shahid Kapoor and Genelia D’souza, will release early next year. When contacted, Shahid said, “I love dancing, as it makes me feel great. Movies, especially Chance Pe Dance, have given me a chance to showcase my prowess. I have a good feeling about this movie, and I think Genelia and I make a good on-screen pair. Many parts of Chance Pe Dance are similar to my life, but it’s just a co-incidence.”

Abhishek Bachchan died in Sarkar 2 and Aishwarya’s character took over the reins for a while. The movie ended on an open note with Amitabh Bachchan’s character, Subhash Nagre, demanding that he wanted to see Kay Kay Menon’s son Chikoo, so that he could train him to take over the empire. Ranbir Kapoor was offered the role of the grown-up Chikoo.

An insider says, ‘Ranbir has great respect for RGV and his films, but he is a professional. He is on a roll right now, and all his films have been very different from each other. He played a romantic loser in Saawariya, and then, in Bachna Ae Haseeno, he was a playboy. In Wake Up, Sid!, he was the confused and immature titular character who grows up, and in Ajab Prem ki Ghazab Kahani, he played Prem, a happy-go-lucky simpleton. In his forthcoming film, Rajneeti, he is playing the heir to a political empire. His role in Sarkar 3 is very similar to Rajneeti, which is why he refused it. He wants to do something new and different in each film. Even Anjana-Anjani is a love story, but the twist is that there are only two primary characters in the movie.’

Ranbir’s refusal to do the film has not gone down very well with RGV, and he has scrapped plans of making the film altogether. He knows that Ranbir Kapoor is an actor who can convince the audience, no matter what he is doing, which is why he wanted to cast the talented actor. He cannot think of anyone else who can fill in Ranbir’s shoes.

RGV has denied plans of making Sarkar 3 and approaching Ranbir or anybody else for any role. Ranbir Kapoor was unavailable for comment.

Vidya Balan spoke about how the break-up left her in a state of loneliness affecting her personal and professional life gravely. With all the issue made about her weight and appearance, the actress also lost several friends in the bargain. Her spat with close- friends and designers Manish Malhotra and Shabina Khan on her styling had them publicly swearing off from ever working with her again. Vidya is hoping to redeem herself with her upcoming films which will showcase in her light all together.

The actress spoke of her appearance and look in her upcoming films saying, ‘Paa will see me in the Indian look. I am very excited about Paa and Ishqiya both. The change started by losing…yes, I had gained a bit of weight. I didn’t lose weight to wear suggestive outfits. I lost weight to feel better about myself. I enjoy wearing Indian clothes.’ She also added the relationship with Shahid on a sour note saying, ‘If someone who matters to you talks you down, it can break you. That someone whose approval mattered to me started to constantly find faults with me. It started reflecting on me. At that point of time, it was important to walk away from that relationship. I don’t want to take his name.’ On her disassociation with Shabina Khan she added, ‘I don’t bother about how people feel about me. What matters to me is how I feel about them. As for Shabina, what I feel about her is what I feel about any other professional acquaintance.’ She signs off saying, ‘Today, I am standing alone, but I am happy again. That’s all that is important to me.’

When Boney Kapoor was invited to the ongoing Cairo International Film Festival, it was in the capacity of being a Guest of Honour. However, to his pleasant surprise, he was also bestowed upon a Lifetime Achievement award, something which he didn’t see coming at all. What acted as a cherry on the top, literally so, was the fact that the felicitation happened yesterday, 11th November, which happens to be Boney Kapoor’s birthday.

“I have turned 54 today and this award makes me wonder if I have really aged. In fact I feel that I have just started”, chuckles Boney Kapoor when this writer spoke to him yesterday, “It’s my birthday and this award has really made me feel so special. More so because I wasn’t expecting it at all. I was a special invitee there as a Guest of Honour and was required to provide organizers some documentation around my work over the decades. I didn’t have any clue that this profiling was being done to hand me over a Lifetime Achievement award.”

He was in the elite company of actors like Samuel Jackson and Salma Hayek amongst others who were also special guests at the event. Other than them, there were also quite a few renowned Arab and Egyptian film personalities with whom Boney Kapoor hobnobbed with.

“Yes, it was good to be with Hollywood personalities. However, what I liked most was the fact that I was on stage with Adoor Gopalakrishnan who is on an extremely different end when it comes to filmmaking sensibilities. He too was bestowed upon the same award. It is great that industry in general is acknowledging the contribution of filmmakers belonging to farthest extremes”, says Boney over phone from Cairo.

Generally an award belonging to this category signals retirement time for many a filmmaker. However, Boney has been further buoyed by this and is now aspiring at starting newer projects soon.

“I don’t think I have reached my peak to even think of retirement”, he laughs, “There are only a few lucky ones who have managed to survive the industry as a filmmaker for as many as 30 years. I guess there are just 8-10 of us. God has been kind with me to pull me out of the financial mess I was in.”

“With two back to back blockbusters in the form of No Entry followed by Wanted, I am raring to go. I have to be consistent from here on, pick my projects carefully and ensure that I do not repeat my mistakes. Being in a good situation like this, I can’t let it slip away again”, he signs off.

Next in line for Boney Kapoor is Satish Kaushik directed Milenge Milenge [Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor] and brother Sanjay Kapoor’s debut production It’s My Life [directed by Anees Bazmee and starring Harman Baweja, Genelia D'Souza and Nana Patekar].

There is a trend of sequels in Bollywood. If a film does well, a sequel must be made. Along with the proposed sequels of Dostana, Don, Race and All the Best, a sequel for Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani is in the pipeline.

The stupendous success of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani has taken everyone by surprise. Its collections are second only to Love Aaj Kal, the highest grosser of the year, so far. It is no wonder then that the producers want to capitalize on the success by making a sequel.

Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, the melodious and funky music, the direction by Rajkumar Santoshi and the comical situations have made Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani a laugh-out-loud comedy that has appealed to both multiplex and single-screen audiences.

The Tauranis of Tips are now pressurizing Santoshi to start work on the sequel that will be ready by next year. Santoshi however had other plans. He wanted to make a film with his favourite hero Sunny Deol, as their jodi has collaborated on some fabulous films like Ghayal and Damini, among others. His script for Sunny is also ready, and the project is almost finalized. He also wants to make a film with Shah Rukh Khan, and has already started penning the script.

Everybody thinks Santoshi should make another comedy with Ranbir Kapoor right away, as this is his first hit film since Khakee in 2004, and Ranbir is the superstar of the next generation. Rajkumar already has Ranbir’s dates for next year.

When contacted, Santoshi said, “I don’t like the idea of making sequels. Main logon ko same khichdi kyun khilau? I like to make different movies each time, and making a sequel is boring. Just imagine, if I had to make a sequel to Damini, it would be called Fir Giri Damini or Fir Uthi Damini , and Ghayal would be Sunny Hua Ghayal! I have even refused to make a sequel to Andaz Apna Apna.”

It looks like Ranbir Kapoor will beat both Shah Rukh Khan and Sunny Deol to do another film with Rajkumar Santoshi, who is on a roll now and has become a much sought-after director. But is it still to be seen if he will make a sequel, as he is vehemently against doing such a thing and likes to think of himself as a film-maker who is not repetive. Time will tell.

Choreographer Ahmed Khan is back from the US after months’ of shooting for a song with his best-friend Shahid Kapoor.

And Ahmed just can’t stop singing his star-pal’s praises, for the generosity Shahid showed in the US. The actor actually made sure Ahmed Khan’s kids got a long-cherished dream to come true.

Says Ahmed fondly, ”I had been promising my two sons Azaan and Subhan a trip to Disneyland for months. Earlier when we shot in the US for another Yash Raj Film Bachna Ae Haseeno, I kept hoping there would be time. But I couldn’t manage to get away. But this time, Shahid made sure it happened.”

Apparently, Shahid not only ensured that Ahmed wrapped up his work as quickly as possible, he made all the arrangements for Ahmed, his wife Saira and two sons to take off for Disneyland.

”And why not?” says Ahmed defensively. ”Shahid and I are childhood friends. Before my mother held my sons Shahid took them in his arms. So it’s perfectly natural for him to look out for me and my family.”

Recalling the fabulous experience, Ahmed says, ”Out of the one month I spent in the US, only 12 days were devoted to shooting the song. It wasn’t even a dance song. It was a concept number showing the hero and his friends splurging and binging all over the US. We shot at casinos and at various pleasure and tourist spots in Philadelphia, Orlando, New York, New Jersey and Chicago.”

Shahid will now be seen in Ahmed Khan’s Paathshala. ”In a 2-hour long film, Shahid is there for an hour. So he’s there for 55 minutes. His role is like Aamir Khan’s in Taare Zameen Par. He comes in mid-way and yes, he’s the teacher. Both Shahid and I have decided to focus on the kids in the marketing rather than on Shahid.”
